Hand-beaded by artisans of the Emberá-Chamí Nation in Colombia, this okama is worked bead by bead on a small wooden table loom, a technique passed down through generations of women in the community.

In Emberá-Chamí tradition, an okama's length and pattern tell the wearer's story. The long beaded fringe takes several days to complete, and no two are exactly the same.

The Emberá-Chamí women of Colombia have hand-beaded okama necklaces for generations, teaching the craft from mother to daughter.

An okama tells a woman's story in beads, her age, her life, her protection. A girl traditionally receives her first one at her first moon.

Every pattern is placed with intention, tracing a connection to the rainforest the Emberá-Chamí call home. This piece was made in partnership with a family of three generations of beadwork artisans, through a fair trade collaboration rooted in our shared farm project in Colombia.
