Earth Wisdom Collection:
A MOVEMENT WITH IMPACT

Interview by Odyssia Houstis

Earth Wisdom is not just a brand; it’s a movement. Founded by Katharina von Koerber and Hernando Villa, the brand focuses on creating clothing and accessories that honor ancient traditions and embody a deep connection to nature. With a focus on sustainability, ethical practices, and thoughtful design, Earth Wisdom offers products that resonate with eco-conscious individuals. As we explore the theme of 'Impact,' we speak with the founders to learn more about the ethos behind their brand and how Earth Wisdom contributes to a more sustainable future in fashion.

Earth Wisdom emphasizes sustainability and a connection to nature. How do these principles shape your design process and material selection?

Earth Wisdom’s designs stem from a movement my husband and I have been part of for decades. We focus on indigenous values and the understanding that women are extensions of the earth. Our designs reflect this by using natural fibers and plant-based dyes such as nettle, Moringa, and turmeric. Everything is handcrafted, and all our production is done ethically in Bali, where workers are treated fairly and paid properly. Our signature piece, the Spirit Skirt, represents the energy and joy of a twirling woman, connecting her to nature and the earth’s elements.

When creating your collection, how do you ensure the pieces have a meaningful impact on both the wearer and the planet?

We prioritize versatility and comfort. Our pieces feel like a second skin, allowing the wearer to move freely and confidently. Our accessories, made with semi-precious stones, are designed with intention—each stone brings positive energy, such as Citrine for purity or Moonstone for intuition. The connection between the wearer and the natural world is at the heart of each design.

In a world dominated by fast fashion, how does Earth Wisdom differentiate itself in terms of sustainability and ethical practices?

We focus on slow fashion. We produce small batches, and about 60-70% of our products are one-of-a-kind. Everything is handwoven, and each piece carries the story and prayers of the women who create them. We work closely with artisans, many of whom work from home, creating a harmonious production process that honors both the people and the materials involved. We source our products from Bhutan, Columbia and Bali.

The name 'Earth Wisdom' suggests a deep respect for ancient traditions. How is this philosophy reflected in your designs?

Our designs are rooted in the balance of feminine and masculine energies, much like the balance found in nature. We see the body as a sacred altar, and our clothing reflects this reverence. By wearing Earth Wisdom pieces, people honor their connection to the earth and the cosmos. We focus on timeless, versatile designs that can be worn for various purposes, from ceremonial events to everyday life.

As we explore the theme of 'Impact,' what do you hope Earth Wisdom’s contribution to the fashion industry will be, and how do you envision sustainable fashion evolving?

I hope Earth Wisdom encourages people to embrace fashion that respects nature and supports the communities involved in its creation. The future of sustainable fashion lies in small, personalized production and a deeper connection to the materials we wear. We need to shift from dominating nature to listening to it and letting it guide our fashion choices. Slow fashion is the key—less is more when the quality and intention are there.
